Fearless
Thanks to new medical research and technology, fear has been cured. Now, people will be able to enjoy the courage of alcohol without side-affects like vomiting, loss of coordination, and all that other fun stuff. Luckily, it looks like the first things it'll go to are curing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and major life-affecting phobias. I just hope a certain Sci-Fi movie doesn't become prophetic. I'm mostly hoping the cure will be temporary, and able to be set to a degree, perhaps on a decimal scale. Permanently removing all fear from a society could be completely disastrous. It's scary enough because you know the military is gonna get first dibs on it, and then we'll have rather unpleasant soldiers. Our biggest hope is that morals are no longer fear driven, otherwise this cure could become a terrible curse.
This development has given me some thought on what I would be without fear. I've realized I don't really fear anything, and that makes me wonder. Perhaps this protein modulator, or whatever it is, varies from person to person, editing the amount of fear we all have. The question then is is it genetic, or does the body adapt based on the surroundings? It would also seem to vary with age. I'm sure a full report on the schematics of this will be released some day, right about the time for them to cure hate as well.
It's rather interesting that I was expecting things like this to happen. Part of my plans for a world-wide revolution include curing many things that make humans unkind to each other, including fear, hatred, jealousy, need to dominate, and other such negative emotions. However, on further theorizing, curing isn't a good idea. Suppressing would be much better, as sometimes these emotions are required to keep a self in check. They are, after all, natural reactions that were developed over a long period of evolution, and have obvious reasons behind them. The question is whether we have evolved beyond their usefulness, and if this development is therefore part of what will create the next step in our evolution, or if it's the wrong thing to do, and will cause more harm than good.
One never knows what the future will bring... but one can usually make pretty good guesses based on previous patterns. I'm afraid. How ironic.
